A special event in New York City was held Monday where brides-to-be were given wedding gowns. The brides are all members of the military or engaged to men who are enlisted. Malika DeRios is ready to step out of her uniform and into some bridal gowns.
"You really don't know what you look like because I'm always in this most of the time," DeRios said.
She is after all, a naval officer, but on Sunday she'll be a bride, marrying her fiancé, who happens to serve in the army. Malika came to "Bridal Reflections", as the salon is taking part in "Brides Across America" which is the bridal industry's way of saying thanks.
28 salons in America are giving away gowns to brides who are serving in the military or those who are marrying someone who is on active duty, like Carrie Fall of Babylon whose fiancé is oversees in Japan.
This is a real gift for Diana Quintos another military bride. "It has a beautiful bow to the side," Diana Quintos said, "I just feel blessed, I really appreciate it."Many of the dresses retail for $4,000-$5,000, which is impractical on a military salary, but the salon is happy to part with them.
Picking out a wedding dress is often one of the highlights of planning a wedding, and this experience takes it to another level. Malika will undoubtedly be ready for action that leads her down the aisle.
